Alexandra Garcia, Decay and Birth
November 29-December 22, 2019
Opening Reception: Saturday, December 7, 3-5 pm
Alexandra Garcia is a Maryland based artist whose work focuses on themes of decay and rebirth in nature. “Decay and Rebirth” is a series that uses found objects to create scenes that display the relationship between living things and death.
Alexandra starts her process by gathering objects that she happens upon during her daily walks. She then photographs the objects using a high-resolution photo scanner, this is known as Scanography, which provides her images with a lot of close up details, but also a shallow depth of field that draws more attention to the subject. Many of her compositions are found through experimentation, by trying many different combinations of her found objects before she finds the right arrangement. Moving and twisting objects while scanning can also distort the image to create interesting abstractions and the illusion of movement. Alexandra also incorporates the use of found antique frames when framing her work to fit with her theme of reclaimed items.
